The biggest mistake we see is asking a trades person without network training or certification to "extend" the WIFI. It usually ends up as a standard modem-router from one brand, with a wireless access point or wall-socket extender from a different brand added on. Because the two brands don't coordinate with each other, your phone or laptop has to switch between two separate WIFI networks as you move through the home. One network is often stronger, so your device holds on to it for longer than it should. The result is dropouts, lag and slow internet. The correct solution is either a mesh system or WAP setup: one brand and one managed network, with access points placed and cabled correctly so devices move between them smoothly.

A mesh system uses multiple small units connected to power points that communicate wirelessly with each other. It's simpler to set up, but can lose some speed the further you get from the main unit.
